Who Was Unsinkable Sam?

Surviving the Sinking of the HMS Cossack
For several months, Sam lived on the British destroyer HMS Cossack, where he became a beloved crew member. However, in October 1941, the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine. Once again, Sam miraculously survived and was rescued.
Final Shipwreck – HMS Ark Royal
Sam was then transferred to the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal, a ship that ironically had helped sink the Bismarck. But just a month later, in November 1941, Ark Royal was also torpedoed. As the ship sank, Sam was found floating on a wooden plank and was safely brought to shore.
Retirement and Legacy
After surviving three shipwrecks, Unsinkable Sam was officially retired from naval service. He lived the rest of his days peacefully at a seamen’s home in Belfast.
